Erbil International Airport is located close to the Erbil city centre.

The old terminal at Erbil International Airport was built on the same location where previously was used as an airfield and military base until 1991 by Al-Ba’th regime. The construction of the airport began on July 1st, 2003 and the first flight landed on December 15th, 2003. Erbil International Airport was officially opened on April 29th, 2005 and It received its ICAO code “ORER” on May 26th, 2005. Due to the increase of the number of passengers and flights, KRG decided to build a new terminal and runway.

The new terminal was designed by UK’s Scott Wilson Group and constructed by the Turkish company, Makyol Cengiz in coordination with KRG’s ministry of Municipalities and it was entirely funded by the KRG. Erbil International Airport is among the world’s top ten for the longest runways (4,800 meters long and 90 meters wide) and equipped for CAT II operations featured ILS, Erbil's runway is unique in the region. Currently, besides its main passenger terminal, it has CIP service for business/commercial passengers. There is also a separate VIP terminal for visiting dignitaries and diplomats and also a cargo terminal.
